How it works
Read the bands starting from the end opposite the tolerance band (the tolerance band is usually set apart, and is often gold or silver).
| Bands | Layout |
|---|---|
| 4 | digit, digit, multiplier, tolerance |
| 5 | digit, digit, digit, multiplier, tolerance |
| 6 | digit, digit, digit, multiplier, tolerance, temperature coefficient |
Digits: black 0, brown 1, red 2, orange 3, yellow 4, green 5, blue 6, violet 7, grey 8, white 9. The multiplier is 10 to the power of the color’s digit; gold is ×0.1 and silver ×0.01.
Tolerance: brown ±1 %, red ±2 %, green ±0.5 %, blue ±0.25 %, violet ±0.1 %, grey ±0.05 %, gold ±5 %, silver ±10 %, no band ±20 %.
Value to bands
Type a value to get its digit and multiplier bands. A 4-band resistor carries two significant digits, so 4.71 kΩ can only be shown as 4.7 kΩ: the tool says when it had to round.
